YU Yunicorn : What’s new?

Micromax’s sub-brand YU Televentures started its operations last year. In December 2015, the company launched its first flagship smartphone called the Yutopia. The phone offers a decent flagship experience, but was priced comparatively higher compared to the devices in the same segment from other domestic brands. The brand has now launched its latest and second-ever flagship offering called the YU Yunicorn. The Yunicorn has been priced quite competitive as compared to the vendor’s first flagship offering, the Yutopia. The Yunicorn brings the same premium metallic design as its predecessor and flagship features for a much lesser price tag.

If you are planning to buy the YU Yunicorn, but are skeptical if it will fulfill your flagship smartphone needs or not, then let’s take a quick look on what the phone has to offer.

YU Yunicorn: features of the latest YU flagship

Similar to the last year’s Yutopia, the YU Yunicorn also boasts a premium and durable metal unibody construction. The phone looks appealing and is head turning thanks to the premium design. While the Yutopia sports its fingerprint sensor at the back below the main camera, the Yunicorn gets on the front integrated directly into the home button. The fingerprint sensor of the handset lets you unlock it in just 0.2 seconds. Measuring at 8.5mm around the waist, the Yunicorn isn’t the slimmest smartphone out there, but is easy to hold in a single hand.

Display and OS

The YU Yunicorn boasts a large phablet-grade 5.5-inch 2.5D curved glass display bearing a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. It offers 1000:1 contrast ratio and 450cd/m2 brightness. The phone is capable of delivering impressive media viewing experience thanks to the rich colours and huge display. As for the software, the phone runs stock Android 5.1 Lollipop with some features from the brand’s side. It gets the Around YU 2.0 integrated discovery platform, which lets you find everything with a single touch. It also comes with YU Wallet, which lets you pay bills, recharge the phone and more.

As for the configuration, the Yunicorn is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor. The performance is further supported by a Mali T860 graphics processor and meaty 4-gigs of RAM, which ensures that it delivers immersive gaming experience without any lags or whatsoever. For storage needs, the phone is equipped with 32GB of internal memory, which can also be further increased up to 128GB by inserting a microSD card. Overall, the Yunicorn delivers excellent configuration for its price range.

Moving on to the camera, the YU Yunicorn offers a 13MP primary snapper with a dual-tone LED flash, f/2.2 aperture, 5P lens and phase detection autofocus to deliver high focusing speeds. For selfies and video calling, the device offers a 5-megapixel secondary shooter on the front with f/2.0 aperture and 4P lens. The phone doesn’t offer a front-facing LED flash, which could have been a great addition to the already impressive camera specs of the device.

Connectivity and battery

In terms of connectivity, the YU Yunicorn packs a bag as it offers dual-SIM slots, 4G LTE support for India’s both TDD-LTE band 40 and FDD-LTE band 3 4G networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and A-GPS. As for the battery, the handset is powered by a massive 4,000mAh unit, which as per the brand promises up to 500 days of standby time.

When it comes to the pricing, the YU Yunicorn is a much better flagship smartphone as compared to the Yutopia. The phone offers an impressive phablet-grade high-res display, a powerful octa-core processor, generous amount of RAM and storage, decent camera specifications, a fingerprint sensor for enhanced security, and a beefy battery. Also, it runs stock Android operating system, so you can experience the OS as Google has designed it. The phone has been priced at Rs 14,999, but will be available for a special price of Rs 12,999 for a month. It will be exclusively available on Flipkart via flash sales in Rush Silver, Graphite or Limited Rush Gold Colour edition.
